"Lock down" series

Over the last year, several important and critical events have influenced and shaped American lives including the global pandemic and Black Life Matters. I have felt anxious about the current situation and uncertainty towards the future. This new series of work expresses my concerns and desire for equity, diversity and unity during this difficult time.

The inspiration for this series came from my stay-at-home life experience which has created physical and psychological challenges for individuals and families. I continue using Long hair to represent growth and the change over time. Many people have let their hair and beard grow long enough to serve as masks or wrapped scarfs. To me, this hairdo has become a new icon of 2020. The title of drawing “Distant Connection” not only refers to the current need for “Social Distance”, but also implies the continued importance of connections such as in many virtual ways like tree roots. I use my trademark imagery of longhair to capture this important element during quarantine life.
